Belladonna* presents a night of readings by Alissa Quart and Celina Su. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Join us for the first Fall reading of 2019 at Berl's Brooklyn Poetry Shop on October 30th at 7 pm. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Alissa Quart is the author of four non-fiction books, Squeezed: Why Our Families Can't Afford America (Ecco/HarperCollins, 2018), Branded (Basic Books, 2003) and Hothouse Kids (Penguin Press, 2006), and Republic of Outsiders: The Power of Amateurs, Dreamers and Rebels (The New Press, 2013). She is the Executive Editor of the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, a journalism non-profit devoted to reporting on inequality. She has written for The New York Times, The Atlantic, The New York Review of Books, Elle, O Magazine and many other publications. She writes the Outclassed column for The Guardian. She received the 2018 Columbia Journalism School Alumna Award and the 2017 L.A. Press Club Award for Commentary. She was a 2010 Nieman fellow at Harvard University. As a professor she was a 2015 Ottaway Professor at SUNY New Paltz and taught at a number of universities including Columbia University’s Journalism School. Her poems have been published by the London Review of Books, The Nation, and many other publications. Monetized (Miami University Press, 2015) is her first poetry book and she has a collection of poetry forthcoming from OR Books, Thoughts and Prayers. (September 2019) ---------------------------------------------------------------- Celina Su is the Marilyn J. Gittell Chair in Urban Studies and a Professor of Political Science at the City University of New York. Her publications include Streetwise for Book Smarts: Grassroots Organizing and Education Reform in the Bronx (Cornell University Press) and essays in Harper’s, n+1, and elsewhere. She has received several distinguished fellowships, including a Berlin Prize and a Whiting Award for Excellence in Teaching. As a writer, Celina's debut full-length collection of poetry, Landia, was published by Belladonna* in 2018. Her work has appeared in n+1, Boston Review, Aufgabe, and other journals. She is the recipient of numerous fellowships, including residencies at or scholarships from Ucross, Millay Colony, and Bread Loaf. She is the author of two poetry chapbooks, Plurality Decree (MIEL Books, 2015) and Beyond Relief (with Ariana Reines, Belladonna* Series, 2013). Celina received a Ph.D. in Urban Studies from MIT. She was born in São Paulo, moved to the US in middle school, and lives with her family in Brooklyn. She is fond of sending out new year's cards, talking to strangers, and cutting up paper.
